No Jack Spade in the Mission is a coalition of residents, small businesses, community groups and elected officials working together to uphold the public approval process for big businesses that want to bring stores to San Francisco.

By claiming to be an “independent business,” Jack Spade — the men’s arm of high-end retailer kate spade, itself a subsidiary of publicly-traded Fifth and Pacific Companies, Inc. — was able to avoid a conditional use hearing, undermining formula retail laws and paving a path for other large corporations to game the system.

The campaign aims both to force Jack Spade to respect the public hearing process, and to send a message to other big corporations: if they follow suit, they ignore the community at their own peril.
